Are others out there getting a little frustrated when it comes to constantly having to toe the line? For the last 2 years now we have been learning to jump through hoops and perfect the act of changing the way we do things or write things to please those marking us - even if we disagree with what we have to do. This placement I have had 2 supervisors, one for the first 2 weeks and one for the last 2. As part of our placement we have to write full admission summaries (like soapiers) for all of our new patients. Having shown mine to the first supervisor who suggested a couple of corrections (which I made), the second supervisor now recommends a totally different admission summary - I now have to make loads of changes which I have to try and squeeze into the day as I cannot take them home.
I feel very confident in a medical setting and believe I can often tell when things are a complete waste of time but I never know as a student how far to take things. In my opinion, supervisors tend to like students who agree with most things they say and do everything they ask without too much questioning? In my last clinic I questioned quite a bit about treatments we were asked to do that contradicted what we were taught at uni. Subsequently, in my appraisal I was told I was too "forward". What if we have serious doubts about the whats and whys? Does anyone else get sick of having to agree all the time? Where is that line?

Hey Leah,
I know what you mean. I hate hoops, but we were warned at uni that we would run into supervisors that we disagreed with (Danielle was constantly reminding us about that in EPA). We were also told that we would need to work on a diplomatic way to state our opinions or correct others. Having said that I am not sure what specifically constitutes as a 'diplomatic' approach, but I think Danielle said that presenting current journal articles was a good start.
As for your SOAPIERs: just jump the hoops because unfortunately you will be jumping through them for a long time. You will not always agree with your supervisors when you start being paid, so perhaps this is just the first of many lessons.
Sorry KP but have to disagree a little. If no-one challenged anything or thought outside the box, nothing would ever change. Hoops are there to be stretched and hopefully eventually broken. I just hope I can do this a little more often when on a payroll. In my experience, sometimes it is scary just how little some medical personel really do know. My plan is to always challenge what I am being taught, just have to perfect the art of tactfulness!!!!
Hey Leah,
I totally agree with you (if thats any surprise???). I got told on my last placement that i am too forward as well. I agree that if no-one challenged anything then we would never progress, and if someone believes in something but can't argue for it, then maybe its not the truth they think it is. I have found that every supervisor likes everything done slightly differently ie notes, plans, SOAPIERs etc, I reckon keep fighting, but toe the line just enough to get through. Debate is integral to learning, and if supervisors don't want their ideas to be debated, maybe they shouldn't be supervising????
