Paper Work

Sometimes I feel like less of a physio and more of a secretary. I feel like I'm trapped under a mountain of paper work. Between writing patient notes, admission summaries and discharge summaries I never seem to catch up with all my paper work.

Hi Kristie,
I think that the amount of time we spend writing notes will reduce as we become more and more familiar with the information we are working with. We are also being encouraged to report every detail of our assessments and treatment, but that probably won't be necessary when we are fully qualified. It also seems to depend on the clinical setting. For example, I'm doing cardiothoracic surg at the moment and all we do is sign a clinical pathway sheet after seeing the patient. The only time we do a soapier is when the patient goes off the pathway.

KP don’t panic,
I too know of this paper work you speak of!! It is a constant battle of keeping up! It has taken a majority of my time management skills to keep current with my SOAP’s which can take up to 10 min +! Not only that…just chasing pt records down!! I suppose it does come with experience (not to say I am at that stage yet!). One thing I have learnt during this prac is the 'gaze it grab it' approach. This consists of once it is in site…GRAB it (that is if it is not in someone’s [ie. Doc, nurse, OT, ST, Reg or CONSULTANT’S] hand)! I then write up everything I’ve done thus far such as the treatment, start filling out the t/f or handover (even if its not quite complete or if I end up writing in it more than once that day)…just to cut down on the work load and SOMETHING is at least on record if it gets taken to MRI/X-ray etc. Other than that…I think it will always be a nuisance for us (well, its probably that way for everyone on staff!!!).
